From historical buildings to tropical rainforests and world-class shopping - Uppsala is a treasure trove that is full of surprises! Here, we have picked out some of the numerous sights the town has to offer so as to enable you to make the most of your stay here with us at Villa Anna!
Uppsala Cathedral
Use the spires of Uppsala's most iconic building as a landmark as you walk around the town! This Gothic cathedral - the largest in Scandinavia - was inaugurated in 1435 and it has a rich history, to say the least. Many royals have been buried here and the cathedral is also home to invaluable treasures such as the gilded shrine with Erik the Saint's relics and a famous pulpit from the Baroque era.
Trefaldighetskyrkan (Trefaldighets church)
Directly south of the cathedral, you will find Helga Trefaldighets church. The 13th-century sacristy, the medieval sundial, the fantastic vault with 15th-century paintings and glass paintings from the early 1900s are just some of the reasons to visit Trefaldighetskyrkan as you walk around the town.
Gustavianum
Ancient Gustavianum at Domkyrkoplan belongs to Uppsala University and is one of the town's most famous buildings. In the middle of the building, you will find Rudbeck's anatomical theatre, a dome crowned with a sundial that lets in masses of light through the numerous windows. Today, Gustavianum is used as a university museum.
Dekanhuset (Dean House)
Dekanhuset is located between the cathedral and Trefaldighetskyrkan, a palatial building dating all the way back to the 1300s. This building has been used for various purposes over the centuries, for instance, as a private home, cathedral school and university building.
Saluhallen (indoor market)
Feel the pulse and atmosphere in Saluhallen, located just down the hill below the cathedral! Here you will find cheeses, shellfish and other delicacies from the numerous counters. Or why not have a coffee in one of the cafés and just enjoy the great atmosphere?
Uppsala Castle
Uppsala Castle – often the first thing you see as you approach Uppsala – stands majestically on a hill, overlooking the town, the beautiful Svandammen pond and the Botanical Garden. The castle has three museums where you can get immersed in its rich history. This is a must on your check-list.
Uppsala Konsert & Kongress
The concert hall by the Vaksala Torg square was inaugurated in 2007 but it is already one of the town's most symbolic buildings. Fantastic architecture meets sweet music – who's performing during your visit to Uppsala?
Carolina Rediviva (University Library)
The University Library was inaugurated in 1841. It is an important part of Uppsala's cultural heritage, one reason being the library's rare and valuable collections. Here you will also find a boutique with unique products that are all linked to the library's exhibitions and history.
Universitetshuset (University Hall)
The stately University Hall was built in Roman Renaissance style in the 1880s. Despite being modernised many times, it has been allowed to retain its original character. The auditorium, light domes and formal hall - the University Hall is an experience of beauty that you mustn't miss.
Bror Hjort's house
Bror Hjort was a famous sculptor and painter whose works of art can be seen in the house where he lived and had his studio. The artist's home - now a museum - is incredibly well preserved and it holds about 250 of Bror Hjort's works. In the summer, you can have a coffee in the pretty garden.
Fyrisån (the Fyrisån river)
Without the Fyrisån river, Uppsala wouldn't be Uppsala! The river, which is the longest in the county of Uppland, has an immeasurable symbolic value for all Uppsala residents. Every year, a rafting event is organised where students build their own rafts and paddle downstream.
Pedestrianised street
With all due respect to museums and historical buildings - when it comes to good shopping, the pedestrianised street is the place to go! Here you will find everything you want in the form of large malls and shops. Uppsala's pedestrianised street is not one of Sweden's longest but its range of shops is surprisingly good!
Botaniska trädgården (Botanical Garden)
The Botanical Garden (the oldest in Sweden together with the Linnaeus gardens) is a must for people who appreciate the beauty of flowers and greenery. Visit the tropical greenhouse and the enchanting forest by Jumkilsstigen. Skate in front of Orangeriet's grand columns and steps. Get close to nature without having to leave the town!
